Studio Pottery Stoneware Vase – Barbara Stehr, 1970s

This ceramic vase by German artist Barbara Stehr has a low, rounded body, subtly defined foot and narrow opening. Its glossy layered glaze shifts from pale beige and ochre to dark brown, with natural variations created during firing.

Barbara Stehr was born in Weetzen near Hanover in 1936. She studied ceramics in Hamburg with Otto Lindig, Liebfriede Bernstiel and Jan Bontjes van Beek before establishing her own workshop in the early 1960s; in 1970, she also designed for Søholm A/S on the Danish island of Bornholm. From 1987 to 2002, Stehr was a professor and led the Institute for Artistic Ceramics and Glass in Höhr-Grenzhausen, an important centre for contemporary ceramic education in Germany.
