Ruby Red Overlay Crystal Block Vase Duo – Attributed to VEB Ilm-Kristall, 1960s–1980s

A pair of heavy ruby red crystal vases with stacked geometric profiles, deep vertical cuts and clear polished bases. Produced in East Germany during the 1960s–1980s, their rhythmic forms draw on the geometric glass tradition associated with Josef Hoffmann while reflecting Ilm-Kristall’s precision-cut decorative glass.

Ilm-Kristall developed from the historic Sophienhütte glassworks, founded in Ilmenau, Thuringia, in 1852. The factory produced technical glass before expanding into household and decorative glass after 1945; it was nationalised as the Rosalinglaswerk in 1972 and renamed VEB Ilmkristall in 1983. The company became known for coloured, cut and polished glass and ceased production in 1991.
