A striking trio of bisque porcelain vases designed by Manfred Frey for AK Kaiser, defined by an unglazed matte finish and an expressive reptile relief surface. Each form has its own proportion and character, yet together they read as a cohesive group with a strong tactile presence and a distinctly modern 1970s sensibility.

    • Model 256/19: H 19 cm, Dia. 14 cm
  • Material: Bisque porcelain
  • Brand: AK Kaiser
  • Designer: Manfred Frey
  • Color: White
  • Era: Mid-century modern, 1970s
  • Origin: West Germany
  • Condition: Very good vintage condition; no chips, cracks, or restorations. Minor age-related traces typical for vintage bisque porcelain.
  • Remarks: Set of three; each vase stamped with the AK Kaiser hallmark underneath.

This trio brings an earthy, textural note to an interior without feeling heavy. The reptile surface gives the porcelain an unexpected warmth, and the matte finish keeps the effect restrained rather than decorative. It works especially well with leather, smoked glass, dark wood, or brushed steel — pieces that benefit from one dry, tactile counterpoint.

Manfred Frey (1940) is German porcelain modeller and designer, trained at Alboth & Kaiser and the Johann-Friedrich-Böttger-Institut in Selb. Since the 1960s he has shaped the Kaiser/AK Kaiser collection as chief designer, pioneering white bisque porcelain with Op-Art inspired reliefs and winning several international awards for his vases and vessel forms.

AK Kaiser (known as Alboth & Kaiser until 1970) is a German porcelain manufacturer founded in 1872 by August Alboth in Coburg. Now based in Bad Staffelstein, the company is celebrated for its fine white bodies, detailed bisque relief vases and figurines, as well as richly decorated tableware. Over the decades Kaiser porcelain has become a household presence in Germany and a favourite among collectors looking for refined yet accessible “fine china”.
