Amber Globe Vase – Rosenthal Creative Center, Germany, 2012

Substantial globe vase from Rosenthal’s “Blockglas Amber” series, formed from exceptionally thick clear and amber glass that magnifies and distorts light through its rounded body. Weighing approximately 9 kg, the compact form has a powerful physical presence, while the small circular opening preserves its near-spherical silhouette.

The vase works particularly well on a low sideboard, substantial console or stone surface where daylight or directional lighting can activate the internal reflections. Its narrow opening suits a single flower or branch, although the optical effect is strongest when displayed empty; due to its weight, it should be placed on a stable surface with protective pads underneath.

The “Blockglas Amber” series, designed by the Rosenthal Creative Center, included globe vases in three sizes alongside bowls and candleholders. The 20 cm globe vase was the largest version and appears in Rosenthal’s 2012 Studio-Line catalogue under model 47120.

Rosenthal, founded in 1879 in Selb, Bavaria, is one of Germany’s most important porcelain manufacturers, recognised for combining industrial production with high design standards. With its Studio-Linie programme from the 1960s onwards, Rosenthal invited international artists and designers to create avant-garde forms and décors, making pieces like this set both functional objects and design collectibles.
