The difference in scale gives the pair a strong presence without requiring much surface depth. Hans Martin Freyer (1909–1974) was a German painter, graphic artist and designer whose work extended into stage design, textiles and product design. From 1964 to 1974, he worked for Rosenthal, creating relief structures for porcelain and glass in which repetition, texture and shadow replaced applied decoration.

Rosenthal, founded in Selb, Bavaria, in 1879, became one of Germany’s leading porcelain manufacturers. Its Studio-Line programme, launched in 1961, brought contemporary artists and designers into serial porcelain production and helped establish the company’s progressive postwar identity.
