“Surface” Geometric Bisque Porcelain Vase Duo – Achim Haigis for Rosenthal, 2007

Pair of matte white bisque porcelain vases from Achim Haigis’s “Surface” series for Rosenthal Studio-Line, combining sharply folded planes with contrasting proportions. One vase is broad and faceted while the other is tall and narrow, allowing light and shadow to define their undecorated surfaces.

The contrasting forms work particularly well together on a console, sideboard or open shelf where lateral light can emphasise the folded planes. Keep any floral arrangement minimal - ideally one stem in the taller vase while leaving the broader form empty.

The “Surface” series was developed during Achim Haigis’s collaboration with Rosenthal, which began around 2006, and included porcelain and glass vases, bowls and candleholders. Its folded geometric language takes inspiration from paper construction and received the German Federal Design Award in 2009. 

Achim Haigis (born 1969) is a German designer from Rottweil. After training as a toolmaker and gaining experience in artistic glassmaking, he studied product design in Potsdam and has worked independently from Berlin since 2001, developing objects defined by precision, material awareness and experimental geometry.

Rosenthal, founded in 1879 in Selb, Bavaria, is one of Germany’s most important porcelain manufacturers, recognised for combining industrial production with high design standards. With its Studio-Linie programme from the 1960s onwards, Rosenthal invited international artists and designers to create avant-garde forms and décors, making pieces like this set both functional objects and design collectibles.
