A dramatic Carstens vase with an expansive asymmetrical form and a richly textured iridescent lava glaze. The wide profile and deep surface variation give the piece a strong sense of movement, light, and material depth. Model 0870-30 is repeatedly identified in collector and market references as a Carstens Tönnieshof shape by Rudolf Christmann, often paired with Gerda Heukeroth’s glaze work.

This vase brings real depth to an interior because the glaze shifts so much with changing light. The broad form gives it presence, while the lustre surface adds a layered, almost volcanic richness that works especially well with walnut, stone, smoked glass, or brushed metal. It is the kind of piece that can hold a shelf or console on its own, without needing much around it.

Rudolf Christmann (1928–1992) was a German ceramic designer trained in Höhr-Grenzhausen, active first at Dümler & Breiden and later at Carstens Tönnieshof. At Carstens he worked in the later 1960s, including a period as artistic director, and is associated with bold, reduced forms that fit the shift toward more expressive West German studio ceramics.

Gerda Heuckeroth was one of the best-known designers associated with postwar West German ceramics. She worked for several major factories, including Ruscha, Ceramano, and from 1964, Carstens Tönnieshof. Her designs are appreciated for combining clear, balanced forms with more experimental surface treatments.

Carstens Tönnieshof was the West German continuation of the Carstens ceramic business, re-established in Fredelsloh after World War II. From the 1950s to the 1970s, it became one of the key names in West German pottery, known for bold forms, expressive glazes, and a strong decorative identity. The company filed for bankruptcy in 1977.
