A playful porcelain vase from Rosenthal Studio-Line’s Leones series, designed by Javier Mariscal in the 1980s. Shaped as a stylized lion, the piece combines bold geometry with animated graphic decoration, turning the vase into a characterful design object with a distinctly postmodern spirit.

  • Dimensions: H 26 cm, W 16.5 cm, D 10 cm
  • Material: Porcelain with matte white ground and polychrome decoration
  • Brand: Rosenthal
  • Designer: Javier Mariscal
  • Color: White, multicolor
  • Era: Postmodern, 1980s
  • Origin: Germany
  • Condition: Very good vintage condition; no visible chips, cracks, or restorations. Minimal age-related traces consistent with careful use.

This vase brings an easy sense of wit into an interior without losing its design credibility. The graphic decoration and figural silhouette make it especially effective in rooms that mix clean lines with bolder accents — on a painted shelf, beside glossy ceramics, or as the one piece that breaks a stricter arrangement with a bit of personality.

Javier Mariscal (born 1950, Valencia) is a Spanish designer and artist whose practice spans graphics, furniture, interiors, ceramics, and illustration, shaped by the loose line, color, and playful immediacy that became his signature after moving to Barcelona in 1970. He emerged from the countercultural graphic scene of the 1970s, gained broader recognition with the Bar cel ona logo in 1979, and in 1989 founded Estudio Mariscal while creating Cobi, the mascot of the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, which established his international profile. Across his design work, Mariscal consistently replaced strict modernist restraint with humor, narrative, and a distinctly Mediterranean sense of movement, qualities that also define his porcelain objects for Rosenthal.

Rosenthal, founded in 1879 in Selb, Bavaria, is one of Germany’s most important porcelain manufacturers, recognised for combining industrial production with high design standards. With its Studio-Linie programme from the 1960s onwards, Rosenthal invited international artists and designers to create avant-garde forms and décors, making pieces like this set both functional objects and design collectibles.
