A striking Shigaraki stoneware vase by Atsushi Yuba, made in Japan in the 1980s. The piece reworks the classic bottle form through a subtly triangular body that rises into a narrow neck, giving it a sharper, more contemporary profile. Finished in a deep cinnabar red glaze with soft tonal variation, it balances geometric clarity with the warmth and irregularity of studio pottery.

  • Dimensions:
  • Vase: H 29.5 cm, W 13.5 cm, Dia. opening 3 cm
  • Material: Shigaraki stoneware
  • Designer: Atsushi Yuba
  • Color: Cinnabar red with ochre undertones
  • Era: 1980s
  • Origin: Japan
  • Condition: Very good vintage condition; a few small glaze imperfections and light age-related wear, unobtrusive in display. No cracks or restorations.
  • Remarks: Signed; triangular bottle form.

This vase has a strong, grounded presence. The red glaze gives it depth and warmth, while the angular body keeps the silhouette crisp and unexpected. Beautiful on a dark wood surface, in a quiet entryway, or against pale plaster, where its colour can hold the space and bring in a more tactile, atmospheric note.

Atsushi Yuba is a Japanese ceramic artist associated with Shigaraki pottery. Public biographical information appears limited, but signed works attributed to him point to mid-20th-century studio production in Shigaraki, with an emphasis on strong vessel forms and rich glaze surfaces. Shigaraki is one of Japan’s historic ceramic centers, and the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park describes it as a major base for ceramic culture and production in Shiga Prefecture.
