Hand-thrown spherical vase by Horst Kerstan, finished in luminous celadon-green crackle glaze with a dark band of charcoal, graphite and iron-brown tones. Trained by Richard Bampi and later continuing his Kandern workshop, Kerstan combined East Asian ceramic traditions with technically controlled modern glaze experiments.

  • Dimensions: H 17 cm, Dia. 19.5 cm; opening Dia. 7.5 cm
  • Material: Glazed studio ceramic
  • Brand: Horst Kerstan Studio
  • Designer: Horst Kerstan
  • Color: Celadon green, charcoal, graphite, brown and black
  • Condition: Excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks, repairs or restorations. Minor firing and glaze irregularities are inherent to the artist’s process.
  • Era: 1987
  • Origin: Kandern, Germany
  • Remarks: Signed and dated “Kerstan 87” on the underside

Its low spherical form works particularly well on a coffee table, sideboard or deep shelf. Display it unfilled to keep attention on the glaze, or use it for a compact ikebana arrangement; pale oak, travertine, black lacquer and brushed metal will complement its celadon and charcoal tones.

Horst Kerstan (1941–2005) was an influential German ceramic artist and a student of Richard Bampi, whose historic Kandern workshop he acquired after Bampi’s death. His work brought together East Asian ceramic traditions, modern European art and sustained experimentation with glazes and firing techniques.
