The design combines deep cutting with delicate engraving, where sharply defined stems and softly detailed blossoms create a rich botanical surface. In clear lead crystal, the vase catches and refracts light beautifully, balancing precision, weight, and clarity.

Dimensions: H 26 cm, W 14 cm, D 7.5 cm

Material: Cut and engraved lead crystal

Brand: Poděbrady / Bohemia Glassworks

Designer: Josef Švarc

Color: Clear

Era: 1960s–1970s

Origin: Czechoslovakia (Czech Republic)

Condition: Excellent vintage condition; no chips or cracks observed.

Remarks: Includes original Bohemia presentation box with minor age-related wear.

This vase has a crisp, luminous character that works especially well where natural light can move through it. The engraved thistle motif gives it a slightly wilder edge than many formal crystal pieces, which makes it feel at home in interiors that mix polish with a more organic note. Beautiful on its own, but especially strong against dark wood, linen, or a stone surface.

Josef Švarc was a Czech glass engraver and cutter, especially known for refined botanical motifs and technically accomplished cut crystal. He studied at the specialized glass school in Kamenický Šenov from 1949 to 1952, worked at the Nový Bor glassworks until 1951, and from 1953 was active at Bohemia Glassworks in Světlá nad Sázavou. In 1973 he moved to the Josefodol glassworks. His work is closely associated with engraved and cut lead crystal, where natural forms are translated into sharp, luminous decorative patterns.

Poděbrady Glassworks was one of the key Czechoslovak producers of cut crystal and part of the wider Bohemia crystal tradition. The works in Poděbrady trace their origins to the second half of the 19th century; after postwar modernization they were established as independent Poděbrady glassworks in 1950, with production shifting from 18% to 24% lead crystal. In 1965, Poděbrady Glassworks merged with Bohemia Glassworks to form the Bohemia Glassworks national enterprise, which helps explain why pieces are often associated with both Poděbrady and Bohemia branding.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/0434/3415/files/2007_12.02.2026_1_Vase_PodebradyWork_JosefSvarc_Thistle_Transparent_Glass_Glossy_26-11.jpg?v=1774620033
https://www.berlinretrofinds.com/products/thistle-cut-crystal-vase-josef-svarc-for-podebrady-bohemia-glassworks-1960s-1970s
